At 3,098 meters, the Pico Duarte is the highest mountain in the Caribbean . It is located in the Dominican Republic in the Cordillera Central mountains in the Parque Nacional José Armando Bermúdez .

As far as is known, the first ascent took place in 1851 by the British consul Sir Robert H. Schomburgk . He called the mountain "Monte Tina". The Swedish botanist Erik Leonard Ekman called the 1913 double summit "Pelona Grande and Pelona Chica" .

During the Trujillo dictatorship, this mountain, like the Dominican capital Santo Domingo, had to pay tribute to the dictator's megalomania: the mountain was named Pico Trujillo . It was only after the dictator's death that the mountain was called Pico Duarte.

On the summit is a bust of Padre de Patria ("Father of the Fatherland") Juan Pablo Duarte , after whom the mountain was named.

The next larger town and ideal starting point for excursions to Pico Duarte is Jarabacoa . Climbing the Pico Duarte is only permitted with the approval of the administration of the national park and with an official guide - there are, however, many tours, some of which are strongly touristic. The entrance to the national park with the ascent to Pico Duarte is in La Cienaga, about 30 km from Jarabacoa.

Debate about the height of the Pico Duarte

The exact height of the mountain was unclear for a long time. According to Sir Robert H. Schomburgk, the mountain was considered 3175 meters high until the mid-1990s. In 2003, however, a geographer measured 3098 meters using GPS technology .

In January 2005, a group of hikers measured an altitude of 3,087 meters with their GPS devices, but despite the above measurement, SRTM data shows that the professional measurement is likely to be more accurate. Thus the Pico Duarte is only four meters higher than its neighboring peak , La Pelona .
