The shipbuilding company Kleven Verft A / S has its headquarters in the western Norwegian municipality of Ulstein in Fylke Møre og Romsdal . The shipyard is located on the island of Dimnøya and has been wholly owned by the Norwegian shipping company Hurtigruten AS since 2018 .

Company history

The company was founded in 1939 by Marius Kleven under the name M.Kleven Mek. Verksted founded as a forge. The first complete ship was only built by Kleven in 1961. Until then, only repair and conversion work on fishing ships was carried out.

In 1964 the shipyard was converted into a stock company. The company's four sons, Arthur, Magnar, John, and Arthur Asbjørn Kleven, have been made equal owners of the company. The shipyard was constantly expanding and so it was possible to build larger and larger ships. In 1975 the subsidiary Kleven Industri A / S was founded with headquarters in Rovde i Vanylven. In 1980 Kleven took over Løland Verft in Hyllestad as a further subsidiary under the name Kleven Løland A / S. Another subsidiary was founded in 1989 with Kleven Florø A / S.

In April 1990 the Kleven Mek. Verksted A / S merged with the Kværner group. The company was renamed Kværner Kleven Ulsteinvik A / S. On July 1, 1999 the shipyard was bought back by the Kleven brothers.

Due to financial difficulties, Hurtigruten AS initially invested 40 percent in the shipyard in 2017 to secure the construction of the Roald Amundsen and Fridtjof Nansen . Lürssen also acquired a stake in 2017 . In June 2018 it was announced that Hurtigruten AS had acquired 100% of the shares in the shipyard. In 2020 the DIV Group took over the shipyard. In the same year the company filed for bankruptcy.

shipbuilding

Kleven Verft builds supply ships , passenger ferries , RoPax ships , mega yachts , cruise ships as well as refrigerated and tankers. The Hurtigruten ships Nordkapp (1996), Nordnorge (1997), Finnmarken (2002) were also built by Kleven Verft. In 2019, the Roald Amundsen was delivered under the leadership of Hurtigruten AS, whose sister ship - the Fridtjof Nansen - is under construction there and is due to enter service in 2020. These are so-called hybrid - powered cruise ships. At the end of October 2018 it was announced that a third cruise ship of this type should be completed by 2021.
