Hurtigruten AS is a Norwegian shipping company based in Tromsø . Its core business is the operation of the ships of the traditional Hurtigruten postal shipping line . Subsidiaries primarily operate the marketing and sales of the trips offered on the shipping company's ships. The company also holds shares in Norwegian transport companies. The home port of all units of the shipping company is Tromsø.
history
The shipping company was founded in March 2006 as a merger of the shipping company Troms Fylkes Dampskibsselskap A / S (TFDS) and Ofotens og Vesteraalens Dampskibsselskap A / S (OVDS). Initially, it traded under the name Hurtigruten Group ASA for one year until it was named Hurtigruten Group ASE (Aktiengesellschaft) in March 2007. With effect from February 17, 2015, Silk Bidco AS took over all shares in Hurtigruten ASE and took Hurtigruten ASE off the stock exchange. The company previously held over 55% of the shares in Hurtigruten. The new legal form is AS (GmbH). Silk Bidco AS is a joint venture between the capital investors Home Capital AS, Periscopus AS and investments funds of the British TDR Capital LLP.
Financial problems
Since it was founded, the shipping company has suffered almost constantly from high levels of debt. Because of these problems, the shipping company was forced to reorganize its business areas. This led to the sale of business areas; then the party separated on 5 January 2009 by its division ferries and "Hurtigbåter" that the subsidiary Torghatten Nord of Torghatten ASA were sold. In addition, all investments in hotels and tour operators were sold in the same year. The Hurtigruten ships Nordlys and Nordnorge were also temporarily launched for cost reasons .

The Hurtigruten mail line
The shipping company operates all ships on the Hurtigruten postal shipping line. Since eleven ships are required for the daily liner service, but twelve ships are available, the Fram has been used for cruises to Greenland and Svalbard since the beginning, although in principle it can also be used on the Hurtigruten, including in Antarctic waters in the winter months.
A new concession agreement was agreed in 2018; from 2021, Hurtigruten AS will only provide seven of the eleven ships required for the daily trips of the postal shipping line. Havila Shipping will then provide four ships . At the same time, new environmental regulations come into force.

Hurtigruten expedition ships
In addition to the Fram , Hurtigruten also uses other chartered expedition ships. Currently (as of 2018) the former Hurtigruten post ship Nordstjernen is used for expedition cruises in Spitzbergen ( Svalbard ) during the summer months . The ships Spitsbergen and Midnatsol also operate outside the postal shipping line.
New buildings
When the Road Amundsen and the Fridjof Nansen were ordered in 2016, an option for two more ships was agreed. A sister ship was firmly ordered in 2018 and will be delivered in 2021.
Holdings
The shipping company had a 50% stake in the Norwegian shipping company Nor Lines . In addition, Hurtigruten ASA held 70.15% of the shares in TIRB (formerly Troms Innland Rutebil ), which was discontinued on November 1, 2016 , a transport company based in Finnsnes that also used trucks in local and long-distance transport in addition to intercity bus connections . Via TIRB , she was also involved in the regional transport companies Tromsbuss (1960–2008) and Ofotens Bilruter (1938–2008).
Crew and working conditions
All Hurtigruten ships sail under the Norwegian flag. As long as the cost is borne by government subsidies, a substantial portion, and a true Ausflagg -Verbot for the shipping company. With only a few exceptions, only Norwegian officers are on board on all ships in the regular service . The proportion of Norwegian workers is also very high for the rest of the crew. In contrast to ships from other shipping companies, the proportion of workers from so-called low-wage countries is negligible. The Hurtigruten ships have a crew of between 31 (Vesterålen) and 85 (Finnmarken) . The crew stays on board for two turns, i.e. 22 days, and then has 22 days off. The change in personnel usually takes place in Bergen.
