Foundation and development

The Estaleiros Navais de Viana do Castelo were created in June 1944 on the initiative of the government, which intended to develop and modernize the Portuguese fleet in the long term. The first partners were shipbuilders from the port of Lisbon from cod fishing companies.

The first ships built at the yard were three cod trawlers on behalf of Portuguese fishing companies. In 1948 the shipyard delivered the Senhor dos Mareantes and Senhora das Candeias to the Empresa de Pesca de Viana do Castelo and the São Gonçalinho to the Empresa de Pesca de Aveiro . ENVC then began to build ships for the Great Voyage. She later expanded the product range to include other types of ships, including ferries and warships.

In 1975 the shipyard was nationalized. In 1991, ENVC was converted into a public company with the state as the majority shareholder.

Infrastructure

The ENVC facilities were located in the port area of Viana do Castelo. They included:

  • 300 m repair quay
  • 2 berths of 190 m each
  • Dry dock 127 × 18 m
  • Dry dock 203 × 30 m
  • Construction platform 140 × 30 m
  • Plunge level 120 × 40 m

End of the yard

The shipyard ran into financial difficulties around 2010 and should be re-privatized. In addition, it received state aid, which only later turned out to be not reported to the European Commission - which in turn accelerated the closure. The shipyard ceased operations on January 10, 2014, at the same time the shipyard was leased by the state holding company with a sub-concession agreement to the newly founded West Sea shipyard of the private Martifer Group, which also took over some of the employees. The formal dissolution was originally supposed to take place in October 2015, but was postponed to process old orders. The company was formally dissolved on March 31, 2018.
