The site of the former Estaleiros Navais de Viana do Castelo , West Sea since 2013

West Sea Estaleiros Navais is a shipyard founded in 2013 by the Portuguese Martifer Group in the city of Viana do Castelo , which leased the site of the former shipyard Estaleiros Navais de Viana do Castelo . The focus is on repairs, conversions and new builds of passenger ships and marine vehicles.

history

After the Estaleiros Navais de Viana do Castelo closed in 2013 - and before the formal closure in 2018 - the site and the existing infrastructure were awarded to the metal construction company Martifer Group following a public tender . With the establishment of the shipyard, this sought to expand its business areas. The sub-concession agreement for the site and infrastructure runs until 2031, for which the company pays EUR 415,000 annually. With the start of operations in 2014, West Sea also took over some of the employees of the former shipyard. West Sea only uses data from the predecessor shipyard in the presentation of its service portfolio and references.

In the same year, the shipyard signed the first contract for a new ship, followed in 2015 by prestigious orders from the Portuguese Navy for the construction of two more deep-sea patrol boats of the Viana-do-Castelo class , the NRP Sines (P362) and the NRP Setúbal (P363) . The focus of the newbuildings was initially on river cruise ships for the Portuguese market, of which the shipyard delivered the shipyard's first ship, Scenic Azure, in 2016 and built around 10 ships by 2020. Outside of these two segments, the shipyard delivered a hopper excavator, the José Duarte, in 2018 . In 2019, the shipyard built an ocean-going passenger ship for the first time: At that time, the World Explorer was the first large passenger ship and, with a length of 126 meters or 9300 GT, it was also the largest ship built in Portugal.

From the start of operations, the shipyard's main field of activity was the repair and conversion of ships. As of 2019, West Sea said it had repaired around 200 ships. There are also 16 new buildings for this period. The shipyard employed around 1200 workers at that time. This makes it one of the largest shipyards in the country.

Infrastructure

The West Sea site covers an area of 250,000 square meters and can accommodate ships up to 190 meters long and 29 meters wide, or up to 37,000 tons. West Sea's facilities are located in the port area of Viana do Castelo and include a dry dock 203 meters long and 32 meters wide, a second 127 meters long and 18 meters wide, a construction platform measuring 140 × 30 meters, and two equipment quays 190 meters each and a slipway measuring 120 × 40 meters. The shipyard has a total of eight cranes with a load capacity of 10 to 100 tons.
