The Carmel Ecofresh and the Carmel Bio-Top from the Estaleiros Navais de Viana do Castelo shipyard were designed as multi-purpose ships for the transport of refrigerated cargo, containers and cars. The sister ships were the largest ships ever built in Viana do Castelo .

history

Both ships, which are also referred to as hybrid ships by experts, were built for Israeli accounts in 2003/04 as the Rio Alexander and Rio Yarkon based on the Flexcon 21 Reefer design by the Hamburg engineering firm Schiffko on behalf of Muenchmeyer Petersen Marine GmbH & Co KG (MPC), whose Finance group MPC Capital also raised the capital of 39.06 million euros each to build the ships.

Construction of both ships began on July 25, 2001, both keel laying took place on September 5, 2001. The fore section of the Rio Yarkon and the deckhouses of both ships were subcontracted to the Flender shipyard in Lübeck . While the Rio Alexander was lowered into the water on 4 February 2003, which followed Rio Yarkon on 31 August 2003. The delivery of the Rio Alexander ship built was held on 26 November 2003 as Carmel Ecofresh instead, the Rio Yarkon was on the 15th March 2004 handed over to the owner as Carmel Bio-Top .

Within a twelve-year charter, both ships were initially used by the state-owned Israeli Agricultural Export Company (AGREXCO) in the fruit, flower, plant and container service between Ashdod , Haifa , Marseille , Valencia and Genoa . There they replaced the two refrigerated ships Carmel Topaz and Carmel Exotic , built in 1972, sold for demolition and equipped with lower container and refrigeration capacity . Some of the container slots were chartered out to the Danish shipping company Maersk . Both ships were managed by the Israeli Ofer Ships Holding . After being sold and renamed in the meantime, both ships were stranded for scrapping in Alang in mid-August 2017.

Technical details

The ships had extensive cargo facilities. The ships each had two cranes for handling cargo. The refrigerated hold, located amidships, was loaded and unloaded via two side loading devices and had a volume of 5250 cubic meters (465,000 cubic feet). It extended over six decks (two decks above the main deck) to directly below the living facilities in the deckhouse, which contributed to the characteristic appearance.
