The regular general cargo ship type B41 (other spelling also B-41 ) of the shipyard Stocznia im. Komuny Paryskiej in Gdynia was built in series from 1963 to 1974.

history

The B41 series was designed in the mid-1960s. In February 1964 the first unit, the Francesco Nullo, was delivered to the shipping company Polskie Linie Oceaniczne . The Polish shipping company received another twelve units of the series, which were used on the Bombay Line and the Bengal service. Five units were built for the Chinese shipping company COSCO . The Shipping Corporation of India received four almost identical units of the type Stocznia Gdynia B42 in 1965/66, and the state shipping company of Albania and the French shipping company Compagnie de Navigation d'Orbigny each received one of the B41 ships. In 1966, two hulls for Centromor were delivered from the Elcano shipyard (Astilleros de Cadiz) in Seville and from the Stocznia Szczecińska im. Adolfa Warskiego completed in Szczecin. The three final ships in the series were delivered to Arya National Shipping Lines from Iran. At the end of production, Centromor ordered five more pre-equipped hulls from the Portuguese shipyard Estaleiros Navais de Viana do Castelo (ENVC) in Viana do Castelo in 1973. ENVC itself built four units of this series and subcontracted one to Lisnave in Lisbon. The final equipment of four ships took place in Gdynia, the final ship was from the Stocznia Gdańska im. Lenina completed in Danzig. The details of these five Portuguese units had been modernized, but when they were delivered in 1974 and 1975 they were among the world's last conventionally built liner cargo carriers with the main engine in the middle of the ship and superstructures above.

Technical details

The basic draft of the B41 was designed as a liner general cargo ship that could also take heavy and bulk cargo partial loads with regard to the intended shipping area. The ships had five holds , each served by its own hatch. The type B41 was designed as an interchangeable deck and could be driven as an open or closed protective deck . With a maximum unloading of 8.75 m, as a closed shelter decker, it had a load capacity of around 12,000 tons. The units were designed for the transport of various piece , heavy and bulk cargo . The extensive loading gear consisted of a 50-tonne heavy lift boom , a 30-tonne heavy-lift boom, a 12-tonne boom , five 10-tonne booms, ten 5-tonne booms and two 2.5-tonne booms. The ship for France and the last five units built were also equipped with a Stülcken heavy lift boom .

The propulsion of the ships consisted of a Sulzer six-cylinder two - stroke diesel engine , which was produced under license by H. Cegielski . The engines developed 7200 hp and allowed a speed of about 16  knots . Several auxiliary diesels and an emergency diesel generator were available.

The type B41 had superstructures located just behind the middle of the ship, the sides of which had a characteristic curved extension on all but the last five units. The chimneys of the first two units resembled laterally flattened, squat cones, which in practice proved to be disadvantageous. The main part of the series after that had larger streamlined chimneys while the last five units got angular chimneys.
