The Shipping Corporation of India Limited ( SCI ), also Scindia Steam Navigation Company Limited , is the largest Indian shipping company . The state shipping company operates around a third of the Indian merchant fleet.

The company goes back to the Eastern Shipping Corporation, founded on March 24, 1950, which merged with the Western Shipping Corporation on October 2, 1961 to form the Shipping Corporation of India. The SCI started out as a pure liner shipping company with 19 general cargo ships and over the years expanded its operations to include all major shipping segments. Today, in addition to general cargo and container line services, the SCI operates tank, bulk and offshore shipping as well as passenger services. The shipping company's fleet consists of 63 ships with a total load capacity of around 5.7 million tons.
