etymology
When the town was founded, the village was given the name Neusiedel . With the Austro-Hungarian settlement of 1860, Újhely became the official name. When the Banat was annexed to Romania in 1920, the official place names were successively Colonişti , Satu Nou , Uiheiu and finally Uihei .
history
Neusiedel was founded in 1844 with Germans from the surrounding villages of Grabaț , Gottlob , Bulgăruș , Biled , Jimbolia , Lenauheim , Iecea Mare , Iecea Mică , Becicherecu Mic and Șandra as an inland settlement. The settlers contractually committed themselves to the noble landlord for 16 yoke fields for 20 years to pay 221 guilders and 20 kreuzers annually. After the Hungarian Revolution of 1848 , the peasants were freed from the robot and the tithe .
The village was originally laid out with 96 house plots, 80 of them with fields and 16 small houses. The main occupation of the villagers was growing tobacco . Uihel has no railway connection. The nearest train stations are three kilometers away in Șandra and Bulgăruş. The school was built in 1906. The language of instruction was German until the “Appony School Act” came into force in 1907, banning the mother tongue of national minorities as the language of instruction. The foundation stone of the church was laid in October 1929 and the church consecration took place on May 31, 1931.
After the agrarian reform of 1848 there was a relatively constant economic upswing, which lasted regardless of political affiliation. The cooperative life flourished, the club life experienced an unprecedented boom. The Second World War brought this to an abrupt end. This was followed in 1945 by deportation for forced labor to the Soviet Union , in 1946 the expropriation of the houses and land owned by the Germans (the houses were returned to the owners in 1956), in 1949 the collectivization of agriculture , in 1951 the deportation to the Bărăgan steppe , which ended in 1956 . There was an economic boom in the 1960s and 1970s. But as early as the 1980s, Germans began to emigrate to the Federal Republic of Germany in the interests of family reunification . After the revolution of 1989 the mass exodus began. In 2005 there was only one German person living in Uihel. The houses of the Germans are inhabited by immigrant Romanians, but there is a steady population decline in Uihel.
Demographics
The population of Uihei was around 672 in 1910, of which 97.9% were Germans; In 1930 97.3% of the 600 inhabitants were German. In 1977 Uihei still had 581 residents, 198 of them Germans. In 2005 there was only one German person living in Uihel.
