The general cargo ship type B42 (other spelling also B-42 ) of the shipyard Stocznia im. Komuny Paryskiej in Gdynia was built in 1965/66 for the Shipping Corporation of India .

history

The B42 series was designed in the mid-1960s as a modification of the successful Stocznia Gdynia B41 series. In December 1965 the first unit, the Vishva Mahima, was delivered to the Shipping Corporation of India. By August 1966, the Indian shipping company received another three units of the series, which were used in the liner service from India to Europe. All four ships in the series remained in service with the construction company until 1985 and were then sold for scrapping.

Technical details

The type B42 was largely based on the B41 basic draft and was designed as a general cargo ship that could also take heavy and bulk cargo partial loads with regard to the intended shipping area. In addition, the ships destined for India were equipped with refrigerated holds. The ships had five holds , each served by its own hatch. The type B41 was designed as an interchangeable deck and could be driven as an open or closed protective deck . With a maximum unloading of 8.75 m, as a closed shelter decker it had a load capacity of a little over 12,000 tons. The units were designed for the transport of various piece , heavy , bulk and refrigerated goods. The extensive loading gear consisted of a 50-ton heavy-lift boom , a 30-ton heavy-lift boom and another 14 booms .

The propulsion of the ships consisted of a Sulzer six-cylinder two - stroke diesel engine , which was produced under license by H. Cegielski . The engines developed 7200 hp and allowed a speed of about 16  knots . Several auxiliary diesels and an emergency diesel generator were available.

The type B41 had superstructures located just behind the center of the ship , the sides of which had a characteristic curved extension on all four units. The chimneys were streamlined.
