The Midnatsol ( Norwegian for " midnight sun " ) is a passenger and ro-ro ship operated by Hurtigruten ASA . It is used on the Hurtigruten along the coast of Norway in regular service. The ship, which was put into service in 2003, offers space for 1000 passengers.

The fourth ship in the Hurtigruten mission is called Midnatsol . Her direct predecessor with the Hurtigruten was later in service under the name Lyngen .

history

Construction and commissioning

The Midnatsol , which was laid down on October 17, 2001 with hull number 73 by the Bruces Verkstad A / B shipyard in Landskrona ( Sweden ), is the fourth ship on the Hurtigruten to bear this name. She is the sister ship of the Trollfjord , which entered service in 2002. In order to be able to use the Mitnatsol as a military hospital ship, the Norwegian Navy contributed around 6.5 million crowns to the construction of the ship. The official launch of the Midnatsol took place on April 26, 2002. It was then completed at the Fosen Mekaniske Verksteder AS shipyard in Rissa ( Norway ) and commissioned on March 11, 2003 for the Troms Fylkes Dampskibsselskap A / S (TFDS) shipping company. The ship was christened on March 22nd, 2003 in the port of Hamburg , the godmother was Rut Brandt .

commitment

On April 14, 2003, the Midnatsol began scheduled service on the Hurtigruten between Bergen and Kirkenes . In early 2006 she was moved to Savona ( Italy ), where she was used as a hotel ship. After the ship was taken over by the shipping company Hurtigruten ASA , she was chartered to Norsk Hydro in November 2006 - again as a hotel ship . On January 14, 2007, the Midnatsol returned to regular service. As of autumn 2016, the ship will leave the line service on the Hurtigruten and, like the Fram , offer expedition trips to polar and sub-polar regions. In August 2018, however, she was still in regular service. The Norway Explorer , which is currently under renovation, is to be the successor under the name Spitsbergen .

Machine system and drive

The machinery of the Midnatsol is nine-cylinder diesel engine of the series of two Wärtsilä 32 via gears on two rudder propeller type Ulstein / Rolls-Royce act "Aqua 38 Contaz Master". The specialty of these drive systems are the two coaxially arranged and counter-rotating 5-blade fixed propellers. To steer the ship, the two gondolas can be rotated 360 ° and, in conjunction with the three cross-thruster systems in the bow, enable a high degree of maneuverability.

Furnishing

The ship is approved for coastal travel for 1000 passengers. There are 638 beds in 298 cabins available for this, which are located on decks 3, 4, 6, 7 and 8. The 12 suites are on deck 8. There are parking spaces for 35 cars on deck 3 on the ship; the cars can be loaded from the port side using the hydraulic loading ramp .

Deck 9 houses the sun deck, a fitness room, a sauna and a wellness center as well as two whirlpools and a panorama salon that extends over two decks. This can also be found on deck 8, together with a dance bar, a reading and TV room (Norwegian programs), space for the two tour guides and an internet corner with 5 PCs, which have since been dismantled (as of Aug. 2018) . There is now WiFi on all decks. The large, two-part restaurant, a café, a shop and a cinema-like room for films and lectures of all kinds are on deck 5. Outside decks are on decks 9 and 6, here with a 250 m long circumferential promenade.

There is a bike rental service on all Hurtigruten ships so that you can use the bikes in the respective ports on land. Rental fee 100 NOK per person and port.

In the media

In 2008 and 2009, the Norwegian television broadcaster NRK filmed a multi-part documentary about everyday life on the Hurtigruten under the title Hurtigruten 365 on the Mitnatsol .
