The Nordkapp is a ship owned by the Hurtigruten ASA shipping company and operates regular services on the Hurtigruten on the coast of Norway . The almost identical sister ship of the Nordnorge is named after the North Cape , a slate plateau rising out of the Arctic Ocean on the Norwegian island of Magerøya .

history

Construction and commissioning

The Nordkapp was laid down on November 24, 1994 at the Norwegian shipyard Kværner Ulsteinvik as ( Kleven Verft A / S) in Ulsteinvik . The launch took place on August 18, 1995, the delivery of the completed ship to the shipping company Ofotens og Vesteraalens Dampskibsselskap A / S (OVDS) took place on March 23, 1996. On the same day, the Nordkapp was christened by Queen Sonja of Norway .

commitment

On April 2, 1996, the Nordkapp began regular service on the Hurtigruten between Bergen and Kirkenes . Until the Fram was put into service in 2007, expedition cruises were also carried out in the southern hemisphere, especially in the Antarctic , in the winter months since 2005 . In 2016, the Nordkapp was extensively modernized and received a new interior in the new Arctic design, inspired by the Arctic sea and the Norwegian coastal landscape. The Nordkapp has an expedition team that gives lectures in the conference room, accompanies excursions and provides passengers with lots of interesting information about places and landscapes along the route.

incident

On January 30, 2007, the Nordkapp ran aground off Deception Island in Antarctica . On the night of February 1, the 294 passengers were evacuated to the sister ship Nordnorge .

Machine system and drive

The Nordkapp is equipped with a diesel-mechanical drive system. It consists of two six-cylinder four-stroke diesel engines of the type Krupp 6M552C, which act on the two KaMeWa variable- pitch propellers via Lohmann Navilus GCK 755HP reduction gears and shaft systems. While driving, the power supply is provided by two shaft generators. In addition, two additional diesel generators powered by eight-cylinder Ulstein KRG-8 engines and an emergency generator are installed. To improve the maneuverability at low speeds is Nordkapp with two Brunvoll - transverse thrusters fitted in the bow and stern.

Furnishing

The 123 meter long ship offers space for 691 passengers in 226 cabins and 481 beds. 45 parking spaces for cars can be reached via a loading ramp on the port side.

The furnishing of the ship was designed by the Norwegian artist Karl Erik Harr . Numerous photographs and pictures on board show the history of the Hurtigruten .
