The Fram is a passenger and ro-ro ship operated by the Norwegian shipping company Hurtigruten ASA , which was designed primarily for expedition cruises . It has a length of approx. 114 meters, a width of 20 meters and is measured at 11,650 GT . The ship is  certified with ice class 1B (average ice conditions with an ice thickness of up to 0.6 m).

The name of the ship was taken from the research ship of the same name exhibited in Oslo , with which the polar researchers Fridtjof Nansen , Otto Sverdrup and Roald Amundsen undertook several expeditions to the Arctic and Antarctic .

history

Construction and commissioning

On September 30, 2005, Ofotens og Vesteraalens Dampskibsselskap A / S commissioned the Italian shipyard Fincantieri with the construction of a new passenger ship, which was to be used mainly for cruise services in the polar regions, but also on the Hurtigruten . The ship with hull number 6144 was laid down in Monfalcone on August 21, 2006, and the building dock was flooded in November of the same year. After completion, the ship was test driven in February 2007. On April 23, 2007, the ship was delivered to the owner company Hurtigruten ASA. After that, it was Barcelona , Rotterdam , Hamburg and Copenhagen transferred to Oslo, where on 19 May 2007 by the Norwegian Crown Princess Mette-Marit on the name Fram baptized. The purchase price was quoted as the equivalent of 68.6 million euros.

commitment

In contrast to the other ships on the Hurtigruten, the Fram does not operate in liner service on the Norwegian coast, but is used exclusively for expedition cruises. During the summer months in the northern hemisphere, the ship cruises in the waters around Svalbard (archipelago) and Greenland and is relocated to Antarctica in the winter half-year. During the transfer trips, destinations in tropical latitudes are also approached.

Incidents

On the evening of December 28, 2007, the Fram collided with an iceberg after an engine failure in Antarctic waters off Brown Bluff and was damaged on the outer skin. Despite this damage, the ship was able to call at the nearest berth of a Chilean military base on King George Island on its own . Passengers were not harmed in the accident.

Machine system and drive

The Fram is equipped with a diesel-electric machine system. Four diesel generator sets supply the ship with electrical energy. A generator set consists of a long-stroke six-cylinder diesel engine of the type MaK 6M25, which develops a nominal output of 2000 kW (approx. 2720 hp ) at a speed of 750 rpm and drives a three-phase generator.

The ship itself is via two steering propellers of the type Rolls-Royce driven "Aqua Master AZP 120". The electric drive motors are located in the ship's hull and act via shafts and angular gears on the two 4-blade fixed propellers ("pull propellers") aligned in the direction of travel. The gondolas can be rotated 360 ° and enable high maneuverability. In addition, the Fram has two transverse thrusters in the bow and a pair of fin stabilizers .

Furnishing

The Fram offers space for 318 passengers and a crew of 70 on 8 decks and in 128 cabins. It is approved for a maximum of 500 passengers on coastal journeys in Norway, and only for 400 passengers on expedition journeys. The interior design of the Fram , which was influenced by the culture of Greenland, was designed by the architect Arne Johansen . The publicly accessible areas are named in Greenlandic . The ship is adorned with works of art by the Greenlandic artists Anne-Birthe Hove and Miki Jacobsen as well as the Norwegian artists Thor Erdahl , Lars Lerin , Lars-Erik Karlsen and Håkon Anton Fageras .

In order to be able to be used in liner service on the Norwegian post ship line , the Hurtigruten, the ship has a side hatch on the port side , like all other Hurtigruten ships of the new generation , through which the hold on deck 2 can be loaded with freight and cars can. The cargo hold has space for 200 Euro pallets or 25 cars.
