Vogelsang (Rostock)

Former knightly library

The Vogelsang in Rostock is a short street in the center of the Hanseatic city and is located northeast of the choir of the Rostock Marienkirche . It is part of the former Rostock Mittelstadt and today connects Lange Straße with Krämerstraße . The sonorous name of the bird song is probably derived from a garden that used to be there.

Before the four-night bombardment in April 1942, the street was built on on both sides, especially on the south side there were magnificent gabled houses. The only historical building still in existence today is the palace-like, classicist house on the north side. It was built in 1832 as the seat of the Knight's Library and was later used by the University of Rostock . Today this building is the headquarters of a Rostock housing association. The south side of the street has remained undeveloped to this day. At first glance, Vogelsang can hardly be recognized as an independent street.
