In Greek mythology, Maia (Μαῖα) is one of the seven Pleiades , daughter of Atlas and mother of Hermes . The Maia of Roman mythology was an old Italian goddess, to whom the month name May may be traced back. She was a consort of the god Vulcanus and, according to Greek mythology, was considered the mother of Mercury , the Roman equivalent of the Greek Hermes.

Maia is a Georgian and Portuguese form of the name Maja.
