Maia Morgenstern
Maia Morgenstern (born May 1, 1962 in Bucharest ) is a Romanian actress .
Morgenstern began her career as an actress in the theater. She still plays in the Romanian National Theater in Bucharest and in the Bucharest Jewish Theater .
She became known beyond the borders of Romania through the film Tree of Hope . For her leading role in this film, she received the European Film Award for Best Actress in 1993 . This recognition ensured that she was also cast in international productions. In 1994 she played in Nostradamus alongside Rutger Hauer and F. Murray Abraham ; In 1995 she cast Theo Angelopoulos in The View of Odysseus alongside Harvey Keitel . Mel Gibson then cast her in 2004 in The Passion of Christ as Mary, Mother of Jesus. In June 2012, she starred in a short film that was published on the Internet and directed against the largest gold opencast mining project in Roșia Montană , Romania .
Since 2012 she has been the director of the Jewish Theater in Bucharest.
