The gaze of Odysseus (original title: Το βλέμμα του Οδυσσέα) is a film drama by the Greek filmmaker Theo Angelopoulos from 1995.
action
A is a Greek director who lives in the United States and is coming back to his homeland to present a film. After decades of absence, he no longer recognizes his European homeland. In search of the lost film roles of the Manaki brothers , Greek film pioneers who probably made the first Greek film ever in 1905, he wanders like Odysseus through an alienated Europe, which after political change is in search of itself and its history. His journey takes him via Albania to North Macedonia , Romania , Bulgaria and finally to Sarajevo, which is besieged by the Serbs . In Sarajevo, people can only walk in the fog, otherwise they are threatened by snipers. S runs a film museum in Sarajevo and hides three film rolls from the Manaki brothers. In this destroyed place, A finally finds the undeveloped negatives from a long time ago.
background
Gian Maria Volonté initially played the role of S , but died while filming and was replaced by Erland Josephson.
Reviews
- Lexicon of international film : A multi-faceted and highly relational filmic meditation in which individual history, country and film history interpenetrate. At times surreal and inexplicable, often bitter and disturbing, the film is another impressive fragment in Angelopoulos' narrative cosmos.
Awards
The film won the Grand Jury Prize and the FIPRESCI Prize at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival . At the award ceremony in Cannes, Angelopoulos was immensely disappointed with the jury's decision not to award him the main prize of the festival. The Palme d'Or instead went to Emir Kusturica's Underground . A film that is also set in the Balkans , but is diametrically opposed to Angelopoulos' film in direction and style. When Angelopoulos received the award from Andy García , he only said “If this is what you have to give me, I have nothing to say.” (“If that's what you have to give me, I have nothing to say . “) And left the stage.
