Erland Josephson (born June 15, 1923 in Stockholm , † February 25, 2012 there ) was a Swedish actor , director and writer . He became internationally known as a longtime actor in the films of Ingmar Bergman .

Life

Erland Josephson came from a prominent Jewish family. He was the grandson of the Swedish painter Ernst Josephson .

Josephson began his career as a theater actor at the Stockholm “Student Theater” (Eng. “Student Theater”). In 1945 he worked at the City Theater in Helsingborg , where he stayed until 1949. In 1946 he made his film debut in a small role in the Ingmar Bergman film It rains on our love . From 1949 to 1956 Josephson played at the City Theater in Gothenburg , then he moved to the Swedish National Theater Dramaten in Stockholm, which he also directed from 1966 to 1975. From the late 1950s Josephson played his first major roles in Bergman's films Near Life and The Face .

Josephson wrote books of poetry, novels and plays. Together with Ingmar Bergman, Josephson wrote the scripts for Alf Kjellin's film Lustgården (1961) and Bergman's comedy Ach, these women (1964) under the pseudonym “Buntel Ericsson” . Josephson became internationally known for Scenes from a Marriage (1973). He reinforced his reputation as an intellectual actor when he turned down the lead role in Jaws 2 with the words: "I prefer intellectual battles with Liv Ullmann to battles with sharks."

In 1977 Josephson co-directed the film Eins und eins (En och en) with Sven Nykvist and Ingrid Thulin . Directed by Andrei Tarkowski , he starred in Nostalghia (1983) and Sacrifice (1986). He wrote the play A Night in the Swedish Summer (En natt i den svenska sommaren) about the filming of victims , which was awarded the “Nordic Radio Play Prize” as a radio play and was also translated into German.

In the last years of his life, Josephson suffered from Parkinson's disease , from the consequences of which he died in a Stockholm nursing home in 2012. Josephson was married several times, most recently to the dramaturge Ulla Åberg.
