John XXIII - For a world in peace (original title: Il papa buono ) is an Italian film from 2004. It is about Pope John XXIII. who was head of the Roman Catholic Church from 1958 to 1963 .

action

June 2, 1963 Pope John XXIII is dying. Cardinal Mattia Carcano tries unsuccessfully to get to the dying man. When he doesn't succeed, he begins to write a farewell letter to the Pope. Now follows a brief introduction to how the farm boy Roncalli came to the seminary. It was there that Carcano and Roncalli met. They were close friends and with them both another seminarian, Nicola Catania. Nicola, a free-thinking young man with a philosophical interest, is transferred to another seminary after several incidents, while Roncalli, who does not stop defending it, is meanwhile ordained a priest. Despite Mattias' offer, whose uncle cardinal is in the curia, to find him a job there, he refuses and goes back to his home village. One now learns about the other stations in the life of Angelo Roncalli: About his work as secretary to Bishop Radini Tedeschi, his time as bishop in Ankara and about the time as patriarch in Venice .

Angelo soon came under criticism of his church: when he was the young secretary of the Bishop of Bergamo and sought dialogue with the demonstrating workers during a strike, he was accused of lacking distance from political rebels. Mattia receives urgent advice from his conservative uncle, a Catholic dignitary, to avoid contact with Angelo Roncalli. Mattia complies and betrays her boyfriend for the first time - for the sake of his career. When Roncalli has to appear for a hearing in the Vatican, he meets with Nicola, who is now also a priest, but whose teaching qualification has been revoked. However, he says goodbye in front of the walls of the Vatican, as it would not be good for Roncalli to see him with Catania in the Vatican. When Roncalli is Patriarch of Venice, he receives a visit from Mattia Carcano, who was from Pope Pius XII. was sent to discuss some of his actions with Roncalli. Before that, Mattia meets Nicola, who no longer wears priestly robes because he was excommunicated and from now on he is forbidden to ever set foot in a church again. Nicola wants to contact Angelo and hands Mattia a letter, which he promises to forward to Roncalli, but he fails to do so.

When Angelo Roncalli was elected Pope on October 28, 1958 and Cardinal Mattia Carcano announced his name , Nicola was also unrecognized in the crowd on St. Peter's Square.

Now the essential events in the pontificate of John XXIII follow. ( Second Vatican Council , visit to a prison, Cuba crisis ).

Finally, one finds oneself back in the present when it becomes known that the Pope would like to receive the cardinals at the bedside. As Carcano waits to be admitted, a young priest informs him that someone at the entrance is demanding his presence. It's Nicola who wants to know how Angelo Roncalli is doing. Carcano admits that he never gave him his letter and weeps bitterly. Nicola asks if Mattia could give Angelo another hug for him. Mattia affirms this and asks Nicola to hug him too, as he sees how he had betrayed the friendship.

When John XXIII. dies, original footage from 1963 ends the film.

Reviews

“Stations in the life of Angelo Roncalli, who as Pope John XXIII. became an important reformer of the Catholic Church, unfold in a sheet of images that, despite the recording of documentary recordings, is not a realistic representation of an extraordinary biography, but a document of homage. The emotional, at times kitschy film shows great admiration for a Pope who won everyone's hearts with his philanthropic manner. Its performance for the universal church (convocation of the 2nd Vatican Council ; opening of the church across all ideological borders) is decidedly neglected.

comment

The film is in its original format (also in German) a mini-series in 2 parts with a length of 97 and 92 minutes.

Many original as well as reconstructed recordings with sedia gestatoria and golden robes of the Pope represent the customs in the Vatican in the time before the Second Vatican Council . The cars driving St. Peter's Square at the beginning of the film are also a reminder of bygone times.
