Giacomo Maria Radini Tedeschi (born July 12, 1857 in Piacenza , Italy , † August 22, 1914 in Bergamo , Italy) was Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Bergamo . Today he is known for his strong commitment to social issues at the beginning of the 20th century.

Career

Giacomo Maria Radini Tedeschi, the second son of a wealthy and noble family, was born in northern Italy in 1857 . He left his hometown of Piacenza in 1866 and spent the next eight years in schools in Genoa and Bergamo. In 1874 he returned to Piacenza and in 1879 received the sacrament of ordination . He later worked as a professor of canon law at the theological seminary of Piacenza. In 1890 he began working in the Cardinal Secretariat of State of the Holy See . In the following years he was entrusted with many diplomatic missions.

On January 5, 1905, Pope Pius X appointed him Bishop of the Diocese of Bergamo. He was ordained bishop on January 29, 1905 in the Sistine Chapel by the Pope himself; Co- consecrators were Giovanni Battista Scalabrini , Bishop of Piacenza , and Giacinto Arcangeli , Bishop of Asti . Giacomo Radini Tedeschi was a strong supporter of the Catholic trade unions, in this context he actively supported the workers of a textile factory in Ranica during a labor dispute. During his bishopric in Bergamo his secretary was a young priest named Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, who later became John XXIII. Became Pope.

Radini Tedeschi fell ill with cancer and died at the beginning of the First World War . His last words to his secretary were:

"Angelo, prega per la pace."

"Angelo, pray for peace."

For the later Pope John XXIII. Radini Tedeschi was a teacher who had a strong influence on him.
