action

Nicky has lived in Milan with his lover Picchio for three years. His sister Marta, a charismatic former opera singer, lives in her parents' villa in Veneto with the old governess Caterina. Anna, a distant relative, and Claudia, a shy teacher who has found a home with Marta, also live with her.

Nicky comes to visit the villa and sinks into memories of his childhood. When Picchio arrives, they keep their relationship a secret from the others. They all spend a lovely evening in the town's trattoria, where Nicky meets an old childhood friend and Marta is asked to sing for everyone. Since she has a heart condition, all of this is a little too strenuous for her, which she does not want the others to notice. It is decided to visit nearby Venice the next day. When everyone is ready to go, Marta has a heart attack, to which she finally succumbs.

In the shock of this bereavement, Anna and Claudia grapple with their past and their fears. Anna, who had previously had a sexual relationship with Claudia, falls in love with Picchio, who rejects her. Finally, Anna and Claudia, who have lost their home with Marta, take the courage to leave their old constraints behind and decide to go to Milan with Picchio to start a new life there. Nicky, however, decides to stay in his childhood home indefinitely.

criticism

The lexicon of international films described the work as “a not easy to decipher, symbolic film about age and childhood, guilt and responsibility, love and loneliness. In a finely chiseled picture full of melancholy and sensuality, he reflects on the transience of life and the loss of values in beautiful illusory worlds. ” Segnalazioni Cinematografiche saw in this, as always“ very personal film, Brusatis a variety of influences and currents of different art forms such as music, painting, Literature and theater. "

Awards

In 1979 the film was awarded the David di Donatello as best film of the year (ex aequo with Christ only came to Eboli and Der Holzschuhbaum ). Mariangela Melato received a Nastro d'Argento for best leading actress.

Forget Venice was nominated in 1980 for an Oscar in the category of best foreign language film , but could not prevail against The Tin Drum .
