action

Dr. Vogler is with his wife Manda, who disguises himself as the youthful assistant Aman, his grandmother, the talkative Tubal and the coachman Simson in Sweden in 1846 as "Magnetic Healing Theater" in the country. The already silent doctor plays the mute. On the way, the group meets the actor Johan. This dies unexpectedly shortly afterwards.

The jugglers are stopped at the Stockholm city limits and taken to the consul Egerman. It is said that Dr. Vogler healed people with his theater. At the consul they will also be met by the scientist Dr. Vergerus and the police chief Starbeck received. The consul made a bet with the scientist: Vergerus believes Vogler is a charlatan and is cheating on people, while Consul Egerman and his wife Ottilia believe in Vogler's healing powers. Starbeck, who has something against traveling people, is on the side of the scientist. He forces the troupe to give him a private performance. A first taste of Vogler's skills is greeted with scorn by Vergerus.

The consul had Vogler and his troops supplied with food. The consul's staff also learned of the newcomers. Tubal is tying up with the cook Sofia, Samson with the maid Sara. Egerman's wife tries to seduce Vogler.

The next morning at the performance, Vogler appears to die of a heart attack. But Vogler is not dead, but takes revenge on Vergerus as a haunted "ghost". After Vergerus regains his composure, he mocks Vogler. Starbeck wants to expel Vogler from the city, but at that moment an express message arrives from the king, who asks for a performance of the "Magnetic Healing Theater" in his residence. Sara joins the group for Simson's sake, while Tubal stays with Sofia.

Reviews

“A sometimes romantic, playful Bergman film, inconsistent in style and tempo, with a theatrical dramaturgy; one of the less significant works of the director, ”said the lexicon of international film . For Ulrich Behrens from filmzentrale.com, The Face was again “[e] in an extraordinary Bergman film, one that already heralds the transition to his later films, one in which Bergman defends art and artists - of whatever kind - and Filmically 'protects' from being attacked by a rationalist world that has gone mad ”. The Protestant film observer described the film as "dark grotesque, the ambiguity of which probably leaves many viewers at a loss". For those who are interested, "the Swedish director Ingmar Bergman, who is brooding over the meaning of life, is an interesting example of his cinematic art".
