life and career

Sif Ruud was born into a wealthy Stockholm family and expressed an interest in acting at an early age. A friend of her mother's then gave her her first acting lessons. In 1934 she began her studies at the Dramatens elevskola of the Royal Dramatic Theater , where, among other things, the Swedish acting legend Hilda Borgström was one of her teachers. After graduating in 1937, Sid Ruud played at the City Theater in Helsingborg and at the Hippodrome in Malmö, among others . Later she was mainly on the stages in Stockholm and worked with theater greats such as Olof Molander , Alf Sjöberg , Mimi Pollak and Bengt Ekerot . For her diverse theater work, Ruud received the O'Neill scholarship in 1964 and was made an honorary professor in 2000 .

Between 1938 and 1996 Ruud starred in around 115 films, and she also had numerous television appearances. Despite her reputation, she mostly had to be content with supporting roles, which was probably also due to her rather matronly appearance. Ruud played in some of Ingmar Bergman's films , including Wilde Erdbeeren (1957) as the feisty Aunt Olga, who rules the Borg family's lunch table with strict words. She also had a supporting role in Bergman's Face to Face (1976). Ruud also played in a number of German-Swedish film productions such as Laila - Love under the Midnight Sun from 1958. She had one of her few leading roles in the 1979 film En vandring i solen , for which Ruud won the Swedish national prize Guldbagge for Best Actress . In 1996 she was again awarded the Guldbagge in the category Best Supporting Actress, which was awarded for the first time this year . She had one of her last roles in 1996 as Selma Lagerlöf in the film Juloratoriet .

Sif Ruud died in 2011 at the age of 95. She was married twice: from 1944 to the divorce in 1953 with the playwright Sune Bergström and then from 1954 to his death in 2007 with the playwright Per-Olof Fallde.
