Olof Molander

Olof Johan Harald Molander (born October 18, 1892 in Helsinki , † May 26, 1966 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish film and theater director, actor and theater director.

Life

Olof Molander was born in 1892 to the director and writer Harald Molander and the Swedish actress Lydia Wessler . His brother Gustaf Molander , who was four years older than him , later also became a well-known Swedish director and actor.

Molander attended the drama school of the Kungliga Dramatiska Teatern in Stockholm from 1912 to 1914 . Here he made his debut as an actor in 1914. In 1919 he also directed the Swedish National Theater ( Dramaten ) for the first time in Shakespear's The Merchant of Venice . At Dramaten he was beside Alf Sjöberg long the major theater directors of Sweden.

In 1934 he was even elected director of the Royal Dramatic Theater. An influential office that he shaped until 1938 with a tough, sometimes relentless pace. Eventually he was forced to resign and Pauline Brunius succeeded him. His reputation as a director remained unaffected, especially his productions of various plays by August Strindberg are legendary. He also contributed significantly to the international fame of Eugene O'Neill . Ingmar Bergman saw in him a great source of inspiration.

From 1938 to 1942, Molander directed the Folkets Parker Teater. In the 1940s he turned increasingly to Swedish film, where he worked as a director, actor and screenwriter. He also worked for the radio. He died in Stockholm in 1966 at the age of 73.
