Rya-Rya - Just a Mother is a Swedish drama from 1949 directed by Alf Sjöberg with Eva Dahlbeck in the title role. 20-year-old Max von Sydow can be seen in his first film role at her side . The story is based on the novel Rya-Rya (1939) by Ivar Lo-Johansson , who was also involved in the script.
action
Sweden, around the turn of the century. Rya-Rya is the nickname of the simple girl Marie who works on a Swedish country estate. One day she is seen swimming naked in the lake. Bad rumors immediately arise in their puritanical environment, which is characterized by narrow-mindedness and uptightness. Even Nils, her friend and secret fiancé, as it were, begins to avoid her when, for example, a dance is on the agenda. The farm worker does not want to spoil her natural joie de vivre through the resentment and the small spirit of her surroundings and then turns to another guy named Henrik. He will also be the man she marries when she is expecting him to have a child.
The love for Rya-Rya and both fresh family happiness makes Henrik, who has not been conspicuous so far, into a stronger personality; soon he takes over the “black earth” cottage and builds a small “nest” for himself and his family. The family grows and Rya-Rya and Henrik have more children. But Henrik remains an easy-going guy who lacks the responsibility that is now particularly necessary. To make matters worse, rumors are sprouting again: this time Rya-Rya, who makes extra money as a cleaning woman for the inspector, is said to have an affair with him. On Christmas Eve there is a heated argument between the couple and Henrik hits his wife in the face with his fist, who he is soon convinced of her infidelity.
Again it is Rya-Rya who, out of disappointment with one man, turns to another, always in the hope of love and trust and that little bit of luck. The newcomer is called Hammar and lives more badly from a job as a forest worker. Here, too, her love for him starts ecstatically as in a dream. But Henrik tears his wife away from Hammar and moves away with her and the children. After eight years they return: Henrik now works as a farmhand and his wife as a milkmaid. But the hardships of life and all the difficulties that she had to endure with her large family cost Rya-Rya a lot of strength: one day she collapses. Even now she still has the welfare of others in mind. On the deathbed, Rya-Rya asks Henrik for forgiveness, but Henrik replies that she was a good wife to him.

Reviews
In Dagens Nyheter 1949 it could be read: “The charm of the novel lay not least in the contrast between an unusual woman and her familiar surroundings. It is regrettable that the film - Alf Sjöberg's film - does not manage to have the format to balance these two components. Nobody will deny the extreme seriousness with which Alf Sjöberg approached this task: his artistic conscience is quite incorruptible. (...) Now the film has its main strength in Eva Dahlbeck's farm worker, who is really convinced of her ambition not to be like others and not want to be suffocated by her environment. "
In the Swedish Mora Tidning, Niels Beyer said at the same time: “... a richer and more important subject that Alf Sjöberg has never shown in a film. But that's exactly why we have to say that the film makes an extremely mixed impression: brilliant in detail, but overall unsuccessful. "
Reclam's film guide wrote about “Rya-Rya - Just a Mother”: “A woman's image of life, her dreams, happiness and disappointments is embedded in a precise description of the milieu (...) Eva Dahlbeck offers an excellent performance. Her face vividly shows the inner transformation of her heroine ... "
“A fascinating portrait of a woman against the background of gloomy, naturalistic images from Sweden at the turn of the century. In addition to the outstanding camera work, the main actress is particularly captivating. "
