Lo-Johansson is considered the leading author of the so-called Agricultural School, a group of Swedish writers from the agricultural milieu who wrote about their childhood, which was marked by poverty and joylessness, and the struggle for existence of their youth. In novels, short stories and theoretical writings, he describes the fate of individuals and the collective of all farm workers. He lived in Stockholm's Mariaberget district for more than five decades .

Lo-Johansson is known for his vivid descriptions of the literary circles of the 20s, 30s and 40s. He was of the opinion that literature should always take the perspective of the underdog .

Stylistically, naturalism and documentary realism alternate.
