Damiano Damiani (born July 23, 1922 in Pasiano di Pordenone , Friuli-Venezia Giulia , Italy , † March 7, 2013 in Rome ) was an Italian screenwriter and film director . He gained particular fame through socially critical political thrillers such as The Clan That Walled Up His Enemies Alive (1971).

Life

In Milan , Damiani studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera . He was politically active and drew comics, billboards and posters. First collaborations on documentary films followed. In 1953 he went to Rome and met Cesare Zavattini there, who introduced Damiani to cinematic neorealism . Before he worked independently as a director, he also worked as a co-writer for several films.

Damiani's films often deal with the intertwining of politics and the mafia. He also made action films. He liked to use novels by well-known authors such as Alberto Moravia as templates for his films . He also made films about the mafia for television. The series Alone against the Mafia with Michele Placido was an international success. Despite or because of this success, the television series had many opponents.

Damiani celebrated his greatest successes in the late sixties and early seventies with the mafia films "The Day of the Owl", "The Clan That Walled Up Its Enemies Alive", "Proceedings Dropped - Forget It" and "Why Did Public Prosecutor Traini Have To Die?". The main role was always played by Franco Nero . “The clan that walled up its enemies alive” was not only very successful in its country of origin, but also received wide international attention.

Unlike Francesco Rosi , who was also of the same age, who was also very successful at this time , Damiani not only concentrated on showing the structures of the Mafia, but also shot very emotional thrillers and crime stories, in which the organizations mostly remained in the background and only their actions and entanglements gradually after were pointed out by the protagonists. Damiani proved his great talent in image composition and camera work.
