Mario Bonnard (born June 21, 1889 in Rome , † March 22, 1965 ibid) was an Italian actor , film director and screenwriter .

Life

Mario Bonnard began his acting career on the Roman amateur stage when he was not yet twenty. After only six months he appeared in short silent films unnamed. He soon got leading roles in which he played teenage lovers and bon vivants. In 1913 he was partner of Lyda Borelli in But my love does not die . Bonnard enjoyed considerable popularity as a heartthrob before World War I, and a play called Gastone was even written about him. When the war broke out, he was drafted but released from military service. He played in patriotic films and founded Bonnard-Film in Turin in 1916 and Electra in 1917. At this time he also began directing himself and tried his hand at a wide variety of genres.

In 1925 he came to Germany and directed several films with international cast in Berlin. Marcella Albani has repeatedly been its leading actress. Together with Nunzio Malasomma , he shot The Battle of the Matterhorn in 1928 , which helped Luis Trenker achieve his breakthrough. More films with the daring mountaineer Trenker followed. At the beginning of the 1930s he shifted the main focus of his work to Paris and directed French and Franco-Italian productions before finally settling in Rome. He shot here with numerous well-known Italian actors of his time. His specialty were adaptations of stage comedies. Among other things, he helped Aldo Fabrizi and Anna Magnani to early successes.

After the Second World War, he remained true to his previous style , unimpressed by the emerging Italian neorealism . His last productions were typical of the sandals and monumental films made at the end of the 1950s, mostly in the Roman Empire .
