action

In order to be able to offer his wife Carmela a certain amount of prosperity, a poor fisherman takes part in a trip into the China Sea, which is well paid. During his absence, however, Carmela falls in love with Vito, a friend of her husband, and makes him her lover. Vito, ill and weak-willed, suffers from the betrayal of his friend and the pointed remarks of the villagers.
One evening he tries to forget his misfortune by visiting a cathouse ; there he meets Cristina, who feels like him. After another episode of illness, he tries to get Cristina out of the milieu and place her with a friend of his mother's. He also promises her the wedding. However, when Carmela tries to confront her rival, she decides to return to the cathouse. At the last moment, Vito can prevent that.

“After a respectable first part, the film falls into all the usual clichés about Naples. De Lullo cannot convince as an actor; however, the lively Doris Duranti portrays the Carmela masterfully, ”wrote G. Medagliani in Hollywood magazine

Remarks

The film is based on the stage comedy Ò voto by Salvatore Di Giacomo and Alfredo Cognetti .

Franco Franchi , who would later enjoy great success as a comedian, made his first appearance in this film. Even Sophia Loren has a villager a small role.
