action

In the year 67 AD, a new temple is to be built in Corinth in honor of the goddess Aphrodite . The architect and sculptor Demetrius, who recently returned to his homeland, is commissioned with the planning. He has nothing but contempt for the current situation in Corinth; for Antigonus, the new governor , and his domestic political advisor Erasto, have established a dictatorial regime that oppresses the people, expropriates them at will and persecutes the Christians.

Diala , the Phoenician merchant's daughter, is among the city's numerous slaves . After her father was killed by soldiers, the Macedonian bought Kibur to play love games with her. Diala, however, knows how to defend herself by denouncing her master to the governor with false news. Thereupon Antigonus has the Macedonian executed and takes Diala into his palace. During a rampant nighttime feast, Diala ensures that Stenele, the governor's wife, is killed by a poisoned arrow. Now Diala can exercise tyranny together with Antigonus .

Diala is chosen to model Demetrius for the statue of Aphrodite. She falls in love with the artist. But he only has eyes left for Diala's pretty servant Lerna. Demetrius introduced this to Corinth's small Christian community. When Diala found out why she was rejected by Demetrius, she wants revenge on her rival. To this end, she incites Antigonus against the Christians. The soldiers manage to track them down at their secret meeting place and capture them. Demetrius, who has since been baptized and married Lerna, is among the prisoners . Now the governor intends to show the people another example of his power by having the Christians killed. The sudden outbreak of the plague , however, prevents his plan; Antigonus and Diala fall victim to the disease. The Christians manage to escape from prison. The news of the death of Emperor Nero gives them hope for peace, freedom and a better life.

Production notes

The director Sergio Leone , who later became world-famous, also worked on the script and direction without being mentioned in the opening credits. The buildings were designed by the film architect Saverio d'Eugenio . Giancarlo Bartolini Salimbeni contributed the costumes.

criticism

The lexicon of international film only briefly outlines the plot in its book edition. In the later online edition, Zweiausendeins.de , the conclusion is : "Boring and awkwardly staged."
