Maia Shibutani (born July 20, 1994 in New York City , New York ) is an American figure skater who starts in ice dancing .

Career

Maia Shibutani's ice dance partner has been her brother Alex Shibutani since 2004 . The ice dance couple was trained together by Igor Schpilband and Marina Sujewa until 2012 . When they decided to go their separate ways, the Shibutanis stayed with Marina Sujewa.

In 2009 the Shibutanis won the silver medal at the Junior World Championship in Sofia behind their compatriots Madison Chock and Greg Zuerlein . In 2010 they became US junior champions.

The siblings made their breakthrough among seniors in the 2010/11 season. They became national runners-up behind Meryl Davis and Charlie White . In their first participation in four continents championships , they also won the silver medal behind their compatriots. They made their world championship debut in Moscow by winning the bronze medal. They benefited from a fall of Fabian Bourzat in the freestyle.

The next few years weren't quite as successful as the debut. Often minor injuries and illnesses interfered with better preparation or performance. At the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi , it was only enough for ninth place. It was not until the 2015/16 season that there was a noticeable upturn. For the first time, the Shibutanis became US champions . Then they won the four continents championships in Taipei for the first time . At the World Championships in Boston , the siblings won the silver medal in front of their home crowd after a five-year absence from the World Cup podium. They delighted the audience with their free dance to the song Fix You by Coldplay . The judges, however, recognized the performance with new personal best points in short dance, freestyle and overall performance.
