The Canadian Patrick Chan defended his title. Despite first places in the short program and freestyle, the point advantage was lower compared to his outstanding victory in the previous year. This was mainly due to two mistakes in his freestyle to the music of Joaquín Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez . When Chan had already stood two quadruple toe- loops (one of them in a quad-triple-toe- loop combination) and a triple axel , he made a mistake with his triple- Lutz- half-toe-loop-triple- salchow combination and completely missed the double axel jump. Chan had had problems with the Lutz for the entire season, this time the wobbly landing made it impossible to perform the following two jumps perfectly in the combination. Chan justified the omission of his Axel with the lag behind the music, which he had to catch up and thus hastily the entrance of the jump. In the end, in addition to the one-point deduction for the fall, Chan also got a point deduction for exceeding the time. For Chan, the day of winning his second world title had an emotional component, because it was the birthday of Osborne Colson , who had taught him figure skating.

The silver medal went to 2010 World Champion and reigning Japanese champion Daisuke Takahashi . Both in the short program and in the freestyle, he achieved third place. His freestyle for Eddy Louiss ' Blues for Klook was artistically sure as usual. Despite an operation before the season he was able to show a clean quadruple toe loop in the competition. His flip, however, was underrotated. In the end, Takahashi was 6.45 points short of Chan.

Takahashi's greatest challenger in the battle for silver was his own compatriot, the only 17-year-old world championship debutant Yuzuru Hanyu . The 2010 junior world champion was still in seventh place after the short program, as he had just rotated his Lutz, but then showed the freestyle of his young life. To the film music of Romeo and Juliet and Escape from Plunkett & Macleane , he started with a safe and beautiful four-fold toe loop and stood all further jumps, including eight triple jumps, without blame or blame. It did not get a negative evaluation in the execution of its elements (GOE). He only fell to the ground once while running, but this did not negatively affect the overall picture. His artistically mature and highly emotional freestyle brought him a standing ovation and loud calls of admiration from the audience. Hanyū himself, who had crossed himself several times before the freestyle, could hardly believe his performance and had a crying fit after the freestyle. His freestyle was rated as the second best in the field, he even beat his compatriot Takahashi by 0.05 points in this segment and was rewarded with the bronze medal overall. Hanyū increased his personal best in the freestyle and broke through the 250-point mark for the first time with his 251.06 points in total. For the first time in the history of men's competition at world figure skating championships, Japan won two medals at a world championship.

After numerous disappointing performances by the 2007 world champion, Brian Joubert, he was able to convince again in front of his home crowd. He was solid in the jumps in both segments and stayed free from falls. He only got deductions for two jumps in the freestyle because of insufficient rotation and incorrect landing. For his freestyle, he returned to his proven freestyle music at Matrix . After the freestyle, which was carried by the euphoric home crowd, Joubert fell on his knees and kissed the ice cream. In his eleventh World Cup participation, Joubert missed a seventh medal only because of the outstanding performance of Yuzuru Hanyu.

Joubert's farmer Florent Amodio also showed a strong performance in front of his home crowd. He opened his freestyle with a quadruple salchow . In the end, Amodio took fifth place in a strong field and thus his best World Cup placement. He also improved his personal bests in each segment and overall performance.

After two fourth places at world championships, things looked very promising for Czech Michal Březina after the short program . With a personal best of 87.67 points, he was in second place, not two points behind Patrick Chan. Among other things, he showed a clean quadruple Salchow on his birthday and received only level 4 ratings for pirouettes and footwork. However, Březina could not use his good starting position. In the freestyle, he made numerous expensive mistakes, for example in his two quadruple jumps and the triple-axel-triple-toe loop combination. In the end, it was enough for sixth place.

The young Kazakh Denis Ten built on his strong World Cup debut from 2009 and finished the competition in seventh place. He opened the freestyle with a successful quadruple toe loop, but stumbled out of the following triple axel. He recovered from this mistake and landed a strong triple axel in combination with a double toe loop, but by the end of the freestyle he ran out of strength and other minor mistakes followed. Jeremy Abbott, the best American, landed in eighth place . Once again he could not reach his full potential and had to fight for every jump.

The Spaniard Javier Fernández López managed to improve his ranking compared to the previous year and to deliver a single-digit result at the world championships with ninth place for the first time, but after the freestyle disappointment prevailed. After the short program, Fernández was still in fifth place. After the strong start to the season, however, he lost security at the beginning of the year, especially when it came to the triple Axel. He named thoughts about it as a possible reason for the flawed freestyle.

After a long period of time , the Frenchman Samuel Contesti , who started for Italy, once again managed a rousing freestyle, which brought him to tenth place in the final score. To French chansons and a lively and tongue-in-cheek performance, he jumped solidly and without major mistakes, even if without a fourfold jump. Last year's silver medalist, Takahiko Kozuka , took eleventh place, while last year's bronze medalist Artur Gatschinski only made 18th place after numerous mistakes. Kevin Reynolds from Canada showed himself to be strengthened and reached twelfth place. He also showed a four-fold Salchow in an artistically demanding freestyle .

The second American Adam Rippon took 13th place. The Chinese song Nan finished 14th. In the freestyle he showed a clean four-way-triple- toe- loop combination, but fell on his single four-way toe-loop. After a failed short program, the Belgian Kevin van der Perren showed a strong freestyle performance and worked his way up from 18th to 15th place. For Tomáš Verner from the Czech Republic it was only enough to finish 16th after numerous mistakes.

She impressed primarily with her artistic performance in the freestyle to Mozart's 23rd Piano Concerto . The silver medal went to the Russian Aljona Leonova , who was even in the lead after the short program. The Japanese Akiko Suzuki , who is already 27 years old, won bronze .

Aljona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy became world champions for the fourth time. Already after the short program, in which Savchenko and Szolkowy had successfully shown a triple throwing axel for the first time, they took the lead. On their big rivals Tatiana Wolossoschar and Maxim Trankow from Russia they were even able to get 8.15 points ahead, as Trankow had to get out of the death spiral. For the Russians this meant only eighth place after the short program. In spite of all this, in the freestyle it was unexpectedly exciting again. Wolossoshar and Trankow had nothing more to lose and electrified the audience with their powerful and flawless freestyle to the film music of Black Swan . Savchenko and Szolkowy, on the other hand, did not remain flawless in their innovative, artistically high-quality freestyle, inspired by Pina Bausch's dance theater . Szolkowy showed a single instead of the planned double axial jump and went wrong in a pirouette. In the end they lost almost their entire lead over the Russians in the freestyle. However, they got 0.11 points. With their fourth title win, Aljona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy set the German title record for Maxi Herber and Ernst Baier , who also won four world championships between 1936 and 1939. In the pair skating history, only Irina Rodnina and Alexander Saizew (six titles) were more often victorious at world championships .

Narumi Takahashi and Mervin Tran caused a surprise , who won the bronze medal for Japan in pair skating.

The Canadians Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir reciprocated for their defeat against the Americans Meryl Davis and Charlie White at the last World Cup and won their second world title after 2010 . As in the previous year, the gap between the two dominant couples was just four points, this time in favor of the Canadians.

The local heroes Nathalie Péchalat and Fabian Bourzat won their long-awaited world championship medal in front of their home crowd in the ninth attempt with bronze. The second Canadian ice dance couple Kaitlyn Weaver and Andrew Poje took fourth place. With their free dance to the sad chanson Je suis malade , they created an emotional performance that was enthusiastically received by the audience. Coach Anselika Krylowa was deeply touched after the freestyle.

The Russians Jelena Iljinych and Nikita Kazalapow were fifth and their compatriots Yekaterina Bobrowa and Dmitri Solowjow came in seventh . The Italians Anna Cappellini and Luca Lanotte took sixth place and thus their best career result. In their free dance to Nino Rota's film music for La Strada , they touched and showed not only clear lines but also their dramatic talent. Eighth place went to last year's bronze medalists Maia Shibutani and Alex Shibutani from the USA after mistakes .
