With Daisuke Takahashi a Japanese was the first time world champion in the men's competition . After the Olympic champion Evan Lysacek and the Olympic runner-up Yevgeny Pljuschtschenko had canceled their participation in the world championship, Takahashi was considered a favorite as an Olympic knight and reigning world record holder. He lived up to his role as a favorite, he won both the short program and the freestyle and in the end was more than ten points ahead of the Canadian Patrick Chan , who was runner-up as last year. Takahashi, who had missed the entire last season with knee surgery, attempted a quadruple flip but landed it with both feet. In total, he showed seven clean triple jumps, including a very high and beautiful triple axel . For his freestyle, Takahashi used the composition from the film La Strada - The Song of the Street by Nino Rota, in keeping with the Italian audience .
After his disappointing performance at the Olympic Games, the Frenchman Brian Joubert rehabilitated himself by winning the bronze medal. It was the fifth world championship in a row that Joubert stood on the podium and his sixth medal.
The Czech Michal Březina immediately finished fourth on his world championship debut. For the first time at a world championship, the two-time US champion Jeremy Abbott was able to achieve halfway through his potential with fifth place. He was followed by his compatriot, the two-time junior world champion Adam Rippon , who finished sixth on his debut.
The Swede Adrian Schultheiss with the ninth place and the Spaniard Javier Fernández López with the twelfth place also showed career bests . Schultheiss showed a creative and coherent freestyle in which he acted a madman and walked in a costume that was supposed to represent a straitjacket. The judges rated the freestyle as seventh best. Fernández López was able to improve his ranking at a world championship for the third time in a row, this time by seven places.
The co-favorites for a medal, Nobunari Oda and Takahiko Kozuka from Japan, made mistakes in contrast to their compatriot Takahashi. Kozuka, who was in fourth place after the short program, missed his planned quadruple jump in the freestyle and then lost concentration. He fell back to tenth place. Oda couldn't even qualify for the freestyle with a disastrous short program.
