The 40th World Figure Skating Championships took place in Paris ( France ) from February 16 to 18, 1949 .

As expected, last year's world champion and Olympic champion Richard Button won the men's competition. In the women's competition, however, the Olympic runner-up Eva Pawlik was the favorite. However, the reigning European champion from Austria was unable to compete in the free skate at the 1949 World Cup because of a broken heel of her ice shoe. The runner-up European champion Alena Vrzáňová took her chance and won her first World Cup gold.
