Harry Gareis

Harry Gareis (born November 26, 1928 in Graz - Waltendorf ) is an Austrian lawyer, figure skater , tennis player and winemaker.

Harry Gareis was an avid athlete as a figure skater, tennis player and skier. His figure skating career began when he and his figure skating partner Elli Staerck finished second in pair skating at the Styrian figure skating championships in Graz on January 17, 1943, and won the pair championships with her on February 20, 1944. Together with Elli Staerck he won several medals in pair skating at the Austrian Figure Skating Championships from 1948 to 1951 and performed with her internationally in ice dance shows. In pair skating, he took sixth place at the World Figure Skating Championships and fourth at the European Championships in 1950, together with Elli Staerck .

He was also a member of the GAK national league team in tennis for many years . Before 1945 he was a member of the GAK figure skating section, which was no longer established after World War II.

From August 1, 1955 worked at the Veitscher Magnesitwerke . Initially he was the country manager for Italy, Greece, India, Pakistan and Ceylon. On February 16, 1962, he moved to Istanbul, where he became head of the newly founded Turkish subsidiary Magnesit Anonim Şirketi. In 1990 he resigned as General Director but was also Chairman of the Board of Directors of the corporation for another five years. He then retired on the Turkish island of Bozcaada , where he and his wife achieved international recognition as winemakers with Garnay and Cabernet Sauvignon vines.

Harry Gareis married Ingrid on September 6, 1958 and had a son Oliver (born January 15, 1964 in Istanbul) with her .
