Helene Engelmann , married. Jaroschka (born February 9, 1898 in Vienna , † August 1, 1985 in Purkersdorf near Vienna) was an Austrian figure skater who started in pair skating .

Life

Helene Engelmann was the daughter of the European champion Eduard Engelmann junior and therefore came to figure skating at an early age. She was the cousin of Herma Szabó and the sister-in-law of Karl Schäfer .

Engelmann became the first Austrian champion in pair skating with Karl Mejstrik in 1913 and world champion in Stockholm . At that time she was 15 years old, making her the youngest pair skating world champion in history. In 1914 the couple Christa von Szabó and Leo Horwitz had to admit defeat at the Austrian championships and were runner-up behind Ludowika Jakobsson-Eilers and Walter Jakobsson from Finland, who had relegated them to silver the previous year.

Due to the First World War, there were no world championships from 1915 to 1921. This took Engelmann's chance for further success during this period.

At the first Austrian championship after the World War II break, Helene Engelmann competed with Alfred Berger as figure skating partner in 1921 and won her second championship. The couple defended this title in 1922 and 1923. Engelmann and Berger won the first world championship after the First World War in Davos in 1922 . In doing so, they defeated Ludowika Jakobsson-Eilers and Walter Jakobsson , who had been Engelmann's and their then partner Karl Mejstrik's biggest competitors even before the break in the war. The couple did not take part in the 1923 World Cup in Oslo . Engelmann and Berger had their second and last appearance at a world championship in 1924 in Manchester . There they beat the local heroes Ethel Muckelt and John Page and won the gold medal again.

At the end of their careers, Engelmann and Berger played their first Olympic Games in Chamonix in 1924 . Again there was a duel with the Jakobssons starting for Finland, which Engelmann and Berger could clearly win thanks to the lifting figures shown for the first time. Jacobsen described this novelty in pair skating as "heavy athletics". After that, the couple ended their careers. Helene Engelmann married Johann Jaroschka, who died as a pioneer officer in World War II . Together with her son Johann Jaroschka jun. she worked in the management of the Engelmann artificial ice rink in Vienna-Hernals. Their final resting place is the family crypt at the Hernalser Friedhof .
