Marija Igorewna Petrowa ( Russian Мария Игоревна Петрова ; born November 29, 1977 in Leningrad ) is a former Russian figure skater who started in pair skating .

Her parents are Tatiana Walterovna and Igor Nikolayevich. She has no siblings. Marija Petrowa's nickname is Masha. She was a sickly child and began figure skating at the age of seven on the advice of her doctor. She competed for the Jubilee Sport Club. Internationally she appeared exclusively as a pair runner.

Her first figure skating partner was Anton Sicharulidze . With him she became Junior World Champion in 1994 and 1995 . Together they contested two world and European championships . Her best results were sixth place at the 1995 World Cup and fifth place at the 1996 European Championship . After the 1996 season, Anton Sicharulidze separated from her. He wanted to train with Tamara Moskwina , but Petrowa wanted to stay with Lyudmila Velikova .

Velikova then arranged a trial training session for her with Alexei Tikhonov . After just a month, he left the partnership. So Marija Petrowa trained and started with Teimuras Pulin in the following period . With him she won the silver medal at the Junior World Championships in 1997. In the senior sector, they only appeared on a national level. Pulin ended his career as a figure skater in 1998, so Marija Petrowa was left for the third time by her figure skating partner.

On the initiative of Alexei Tikhonov and with an apology from him for his behavior in 1996, the Petrowa / Tikhonov couple started again in 1998. This time with resounding success. They immediately became European champions in 1999 and even European and world champions in 2000 . It was their only big title, but they collected numerous medals by the end of their careers in 2007. At the European Championships in 2002 , 2003 , 2005 and 2006 they won the bronze medal and in 2004 and 2007 the silver medal. At the World Championships they won bronze in 2003 and 2006 and silver in 2005 . At the Olympic Games , however, Petrowa and Tikhonov missed a medal. They finished sixth in Salt Lake City in 2002 and fifth in Turin in 2006 . The couple trained with Lyudmila Velikowa until the end.

Petrowa and Tikhonov also became a couple in private. Their daughter was born in 2010.
