At the XX. The 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin hosted four figure skating competitions. The venue was the Torino Palavela hall . The Torino Palaghiaccio was the official training ground.
qualification
The qualification was based on a point scoring from the 2005 World Championships or the placement at an international championship that had been determined by the International Skating Union (ISU) as a qualification for the Winter Olympic Games.
24 qualification places for men and women in individual runs, 16 qualification places for couples and 19 qualification places for ice dance couples were awarded at the 2005 World Championships. If 3 single runners / couples / ice dance couples participated per country, only the 2 best placed points could receive.
The rest of the qualification places (6 places each for men and women in single runs, 4 places for couples and 5 places for ice dance couples) was filled by the National Olympic Committee at an international qualification championship. This took place as part of the Karl Schäfer Memorial 2005 competition. Only one qualification place per discipline and NOK could be acquired. The places were only intended for those NOK who had not previously qualified in any of the disciplines (individual run men / women, pair skating, ice dancing).

February 16, 7:00 p.m. (freestyle)
Yevgeny Pljuschtschenko won better than any figure skater before. None of the pursuers remained flawless in the freestyle. Only Evan Lysacek, who was on the hopeless 10th place after the short program, convinced and ended up fourth. The 9th place of the Belgian Kevin van der Perren was also remarkable .
The only German participant Stefan Lindemann was only 21st of 24 runners in the final with only 172.57 points after a very bad short freestyle and weak freestyle. The only successful highlight in his freestyle was the triple Axel.
The 18-year-old Austrian Viktor Pfeifer finished 22nd with 163.87 points (after a strong short program he botched his freestyle).

February 21, 7:00 p.m. (short program)
February 23, 7:00 p.m. (freestyle)
Shizuka Arakawa became the first Asian woman to win an Olympic gold medal in figure skating. Medal winners were the three leaders after the short freestyle. All three remained flawless in the short program. In the freestyle, Sasha Cohen and Irina Sluzkaja made mistakes. Shizuka Arakawa remained flawless in the freestyle and also showed the best ice skating technique of all runners. South Tyrolean Carolina Kostner came in ninth after making mistakes in the short freestyle and freestyle. Featured performances also delivered Fumie Suguri and the only 16-year-old runners Kimmie Meissner of the US and Elene Gedevanishvili from Georgia. Miki Andō failed because of the fourfold Salchow.
German and Austrian runners were not at the start. The five-time world champion Michelle Kwan (USA) had to cancel her participation on February 12th due to an acute groin injury.
Couples
February 11, 2006, 7:00 p.m. (short program)
February 13, 2006, 7:00 p.m. (freestyle)
After Zhang Dan fell badly , she and her partner Zhang Hao had to pause the freestyle for a few minutes. She suffered a ligament stretch. However, they maintained the second position after the short program . The fall prevented the first four-fold litter Salchow in an international competition.
There was already a world first in the short program. Rena Inoue and John Baldwin showed the first thrown triple axel in an international competition. However, they did not win a medal because they had not shown a triple jump side by side in the short program. In the freestyle, Rena Inoue fell on the thrown triple axel.
Couples from Austria and Switzerland were not at the start.
Ice dance
February 17, 2006, 7:00 p.m. (compulsory dance)
February 19, 2006, 7:00 p.m. (original dance) February
20, 2006, 7:00 p.m. (free dance)
The compulsory dance and the original dance were characterized by an unusually high number of mistakes and falls by medal candidates for ice dancing. Galit Chait / Sergei Sachnowski fell on duty . In the original dance, Marie-France Dubreuil / Patrice Lauzon (they did not take part in the freestyle due to injury), Barbara Fusar-Poli / Maurizio Margaglio , Margarita Drobiazko / Povilas Vanagas and Federica Faiella / Massimo Scali fell among others . Also Albena Denkowa / Maxim Staviski made serious mistakes. All these mistakes were punished very strictly by the new evaluation system and the classification after compulsory duties was completely changed - very unusual for ice dancing .
With a less spectacular freestyle, Tatjana Nawka / Roman Kostomarow also won the ice dance competition as a whole. They made the fewest mistakes across all three parts of the competition. Outstanding choreographies were not rewarded. These were supplied in particular by Margarita Drobiazko / Povilas Vanagas , Albena Denkowa / Maxim Stawiski and Isabelle Delobel / Olivier Schoenfelder (the latter were shortened). All of these couples were left without a medal.
There were no participants from Germany, Austria or Switzerland in this competition.
