Torino Palavela
The Torino Palavela is a sports and events hall in the Italian city of Turin in Piedmont . It is located in the south-east of the city between Corso Unità d'Italia and Via Ventimiglia, near the Lingotto Exhibition Center , the Lingotto Oval and the Olympic Village.
The hall was built from 1959 to 1961 as Palazzo a Vela , on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the unification of Italy (and the Expo 1961). From October 2003 to December 2004, it was completely renovated at a cost of 55 million euros and redesigned according to the design by Gae Aulenti . The roof has the shape of a sail supported by three arches.
During the 2006 Winter Olympics , the figure skating and short track competitions were held here. The capacity is 9,000 spectators. In 2010 the hall hosted the 100th World Figure Skating Championships from March 22nd to 28th .
It was designed by the engineer Franco Levi and the architects Annibale Rigotti and Giorgio Rigotti.
