The Cesana Pariol was an artificial ice rink in Cesana Torinese , west of Turin . The track was the venue for the luge , bobsleigh and skeleton competitions at the 2006 Winter Olympics .
history
Initially, there were concerns during construction whether the track could be completed in time for the 2006 Winter Olympics . A small archaeological find from Roman times, near Turn 11, during the construction work increasingly delayed the work. However, the ice rink was completed at the end of 2004 and cost 77.3 million euros. With competitions of the International Bobsleigh & Skeleton Federation from January 21 to 23, 2005, the course was opened without any major problems. In the following week the first toboggan competitions took place, where there were a few falls. The Austrian Wolfgang Linger broke his ankle and fibula and the American Anne Abernathy broke her collarbone. The Brazilian Renato Mizoguchi fell so badly that he was placed in an artificial coma. As a result of these events, talks between the organizers of the 2006 Games and the presidents of the two associations took place in summer 2005 to make the track safer. The three parties agreed that curves 16 to 18 should be defused, the implementation took place at the end of 2005.
In October 2009 the route cooled down prematurely. From October 16, the Italian and Japanese teams trained in the Veltins ice arena in Winterberg , while the Austrian athletes completed their training runs on the Königssee artificial ice rink .
In 2011 and 2012 the track was supposed to serve as a venue for further competitions, but was closed for financial reasons. In October 2012 the line was finally completely dismantled.
