Career

His first participation in the Winter Games was at the 1992 Olympic Games in Albertville . Together with Alexei Selensky , he took eighth place in the two-seater. At the Olympic Games in 1994 he was ninth and seventh in the doubles. At the competition of the 1998 Olympic Games in Nagano , he completed only three rounds and was disqualified in the fourth run. He finished tenth in the doubles. At the Salt Lake City Games in 2002 , he finished fifth. At the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver he missed the bronze medal by just 0.03 seconds and reached fourth place. At the Luge World Championships in 2012 in Altenberg , he was runner-up in the single-seater and team.

Albert Demtschenko celebrated his greatest successes at the Olympic Games in 2006 and 2014 when he won the silver medal behind Armin Zöggeler and Felix Loch . He won another silver medal in the team competition. At the age of 42, Demtschenko was the oldest participant in the Winter Games who could win a medal in an individual competition, only curlers were older.

In December 2017 Demchenko were both Olympic medals from 2014 to publications on controlled State Doping in Russia ( McLaren-Report ) by the IOC stripped . In addition, he and other Russian athletes - including his luge colleague Tatiana Iwanowa - received a lifelong ban from the Olympic Games. That is why he was not allowed to travel to the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang as the new coach of the Russian tobogganers . In February 2018, the International Court of Sport revoked the withdrawal of his medals due to insufficient evidence and lifted the ban.

His daughter Wiktorija is also active in luge sport.
