Michael Walter was discovered for tobogganing in Zwickau and in 1973 delegated to Oberwiesenthal , where he started for the SC Traktor Oberwiesenthal in the following years . In 1976 he made his debut at the European Junior Championships and achieved two fifth and one sixth place at the events until 1978. At the 1980 Olympic Games in Lake Placid , he was still a substitute. In 1981 he was runner-up in Hammarstrand behind Sergei Danilin . At the 1984 Olympic Games in Sarajevo , he reached the disappointing fourth place and thus the worst placement of the season. He won the World Cup of the year with ease. In 1985 the trained construction worker was able to become world champion on the home track in Oberhof . The 1988 Olympic Games in Calgary were again unsatisfactory with a fifth place. Walter became DDR champion in 1984.
