Wolfgang Kindl (born April 18, 1988 in Innsbruck ) is an Austrian luger , two-time world champion and four-time Olympian (2010–2022).

Life

Wolfgang Kindl from Vill started tobogganing in 1999. The sports soldier has competed in the luge world cup since the 2006/07 season . His first race was at Cesana Pariol , where he finished 23rd. Kindl contested only one other race during the season and ended up 43rd overall. In his second season , the Austrian was able to steadily improve. After starting in almost every race, he finished 19th in the overall standings. An outstanding individual result was seventh place on his home track in Igls . At the same place, Kindl was able to improve again by one place at the beginning of the 2008/09 season .

In the 2013/14 World Cup season , Kindl achieved his first podium finish with a third place finish in Park City . Third place was also achieved with the team. In the 2014/15 season , Kindl took second place in Lake Placid . On February 1, 2015, Kindl won a World Cup race for the first time in Lillehammer .

Kindl has also appeared at major international events several times. He finished 19th at the 2007 World Championships in Igls, and the following year in Oberhof he was 27th. Things went better at the 2008 European Championships in Cesana, where the Austrian finished twelfth. Kindl's victory at the 2008 Junior World Championships in Lake Placid was sensational , where he beat the high favorite and reigning senior world champion Felix Loch . At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver , Kindl finished ninth. He celebrated his greatest success to date with the bronze medal at the Luge World Championships in Sigulda in 2015.

At the 2016 World Championships in Königssee , Wolfgang Kindl won the bronze medal in the men's singles. In the overall World Cup he finished second behind Felix Loch. At his home World Championships in Innsbruck-Igls in 2017, he became world champion in the sprint and in the singles.

He finished ninth in the single-seater at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics on February 11, 2018 .

The 31-year-old won the bronze medal at the 2020 Luge World Championships in Sochi in February .

At the 2022 Winter Olympics , Kindl won the silver medal in the singles behind Germany's Johannes Ludwig and ahead of Italy's Dominik Fischnaller .

Kindl is an active athlete at the Army Sports Center of the Austrian Armed Forces . As an army athlete, he currently has the rank of platoon commander .
