The Sanki Sliding Center ( Russian Центр санного спорта "Санки" , санки / sanki = Russian sledge ) is an artificial ice rink in Krasnaya Polyana , 60 km northeast of Sochi . The track was the venue for the luge , bobsleigh and skeleton competitions at the 2014 Winter Olympics .
location
The ice rink is located in the West Caucasus at an altitude of about 840 meters. The railway is located north of Krasnaya Polyana on the slope of Mount Aibga . The grandstands and the spectator areas at the track are designed for 5000 people.
history
The plans for a bobsleigh and toboggan run in Krasnaya Polyana - together with another run near Moscow - were made in 2006. After Sochi was selected for the Winter Olympics, the ISC IBG Group , an international team of sports experts and engineers, began planning the track. Seven locations and designs were proposed to the world federations, but all of them were rejected because the track profiles for international races contained inadmissible height differences. The plant was built by the Russian company Mostowik , which exceeded the planned budget of around 50 million US dollars by 60 percent and finally paid 76 million. It was planned to complete the runway by 2009, but due to the delays it was not opened until 2012. The first toboggan and bobsleigh competitions were held as test competitions on the track as part of the corresponding World Cups in 2013. After the Olympic competitions took place in 2014, the track was added to the official World Cup calendar for luge, bobsleigh and skeleton.
Orbit data
The track has a total length of 1,814 m, making it the longest in the world. It has 18 curves, with a maximum of 17 being driven through within a competition, since curve 18 is arranged after the finish. The length from start to finish varies depending on the discipline (1,384 m to 1,500 m). The starting height also varies depending on the discipline (839.2 to 829.6 meters above sea level) - the target height is 711.5 meters. In order to limit the maximum speed, there are 3 sections with an increase. The lowest point of the track is before the finish in curve 17 at a height of 704.1 meters.
