Josef Feistmantl (born February 23, 1939 in Hall in Tirol ; † March 10, 2019 ) was an Austrian luge and Olympic champion .

Life

The trained optician became the first Olympic champion in a two-seater at the 1964 Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck together with his Salzburg partner Manfred Stengl . After the two Austrians in the first run with 50.57 sec. Having already achieved a track record, they went into the second round with a reassuring lead and won the gold medal ahead of their compatriots Reinhold Senn and Helmut Thaler .

In the single-seater competition, which was overshadowed by the fatal accident of the British toboggan runner Kazimierz Kay-Skrzypeski during training, Feistmantl achieved fifth place, which was disappointing for him when Thomas Köhler won. The Tyrolean celebrated further successes by winning the title in the two-seater at the European Championship in 1967 at Königssee and winning the world championship in the single-seater in 1969 also at the Königssee. He was Austrian champion in singles in 1962, 1963, 1966, 1967 and 1970, in doubles in 1961, 1963, 1964 and 1965. Josef Feistmantl ended his career in 1972.

He and Christl Haas lit the Olympic flame at the opening ceremony of the 1976 Winter Olympics in Innsbruck .

Feistmantl died on March 10, 2019, two weeks after his 80th birthday. He was buried in Kufstein .
