Armin Zöggeler (born January 4, 1974 in Merano ) is a former Italian luge rider from South Tyrol . He is a two-time Olympic champion and six-time world champion in single-seater.

career

Zöggeler started tobogganing as a young boy and became Junior World Champion at the age of 14. Although there was no homologated bobsleigh and toboggan run in Italy until the 2006 Winter Olympics , he was gradually able to work his way up to the top of the world. He was Olympic champion in his discipline at the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City and 2006 in Turin .

He is the only athlete in the world (including the Summer Games) to have won a medal in a single discipline at six consecutive Olympic Games, gold ( 2002 , 2006 ), silver ( 1998 ), bronze ( 1994 , 2010 , 2014 ).

Zöggeler won a total of ten medals in the single-seater at the Luge World Championships : six gold, three silver and one bronze. There are also one silver and two bronze medals in the team competition. He was world champion in 1995, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2011. He is also three-time European champion (2004, 2008 and 2014) in the single-seater, he also won gold with the team in 1994 and won the overall World Cup ten times: 1998, 2000, 2001 , 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. Together with the Austrian toboggan runner Markus Prock, he is the record holder for overall World Cup victories.

On November 30, 2013, Zöggeler took the 100th podium of his career with a second place at the race in Winterberg , after he first stood on the podium in 1992 in Sigulda as third-placed. On January 26, 2014, he celebrated his 57th World Cup victory in a single-seater in Sigulda, another record. He won bronze at the Olympic Games in Sochi. He then ended his career as an active athlete. Since then he has been a member of the technical team at the Italian tobogganing association FISI.

Honors and private matters

In 2002 Zöggeler was awarded the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic . In 2010 he was voted South Tyrolean Sportsman of the Year for the eighth time. In 2011 he was appointed Maresciallo (Sergeant Major) of the Carabinieri for his sporting achievements . On the fringes of the 2011 World Cup in Cesana , Zöggeler was made an honorary citizen of the place. 2011 was voted Italy's Sportsman of the Year by La Gazzetta dello Sport .

Zöggeler lives in his home town of Völlan in the Burggrafenamt and has two children, including Nina Zöggeler , who is also a luge athlete . In addition, the toboggan runner Sandra Robatscher is his niece.
