Wolfgang Scheidel (born March 9, 1943 in Erfurt ) is a former German luge rider .

Career

Wolfgang Scheidel, who grew up in Ilmenau , initially started for the SC Traktor Oberwiesenthal . The Thuringian celebrated his first successes primarily in the doubles competition, where he and Michael Köhler took fifth place at the 1962 European Championships in Bad Aussee (Austria). A year later, he made his debut at the World Championships in Imst , which ended in sixth place. At the 1965 World Championships , both athletes finally celebrated their greatest mutual success when they won the World Championship title in Davos . In 1966 Scheidel moved to the newly founded racing sled section of the ASK Vorwärts Oberhof , while Köhler stayed in Oberwiesenthal. Three years later, the collaboration between Scheidel and Köhler was ended because both athletes due to weight gain and Ä. Sporty no longer harmonized. From then on, Wolfgang Scheidel celebrated his successes more and more in individual competitions, where he experienced his sporting climax with winning the gold medal at the 1972 Olympic Games in Sapporo , for which he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver. He then ended his competitive sports career.

Others

After retiring from active sport, Wolfgang Scheidel looked after the young athletes at ASK Vorwärts Oberhof until 1977 , after which he held the post of sports instructor in the NVA recreation home Frauenwald until 1990 . After the political change , Scheidel opened an oxygen cure station in his hometown of Ilmenau.
