Tobias Schiegl (born October 5, 1973 in Kufstein ) is a former Austrian luge rider .
Career
At the age of seven, Schiegl drove his first races on the natural track and in the individual. When he was eleven he drove on the artificial track for the first time. Since 1989, at the age of 16, he and his cousin Markus Schiegl have been riding in two-seater on the artificial ice rink. In 1992, the Tyrolean finished his apprenticeship as a carpenter with a journeyman's examination and in the same year was accepted into the Austrian national team with his cousin. From 1993 both started in the doubles in the Luge World Cup .
Already in their first season in 1993/94 they reached second place in the overall World Cup ranking. At the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer , both ended up in 10th place in the doubles ranking. In the same year they achieved the bronze medal at the European Luge Championships at Königssee . At the 1995 World Luge Championships in Lillehammer, both won the bronze medal with the team. At the world championships in the following year, both won the world championship title for the first time in the doubles. They also won gold in the team competition. In the 1996/97 season , the duo reached third place in the overall World Cup ranking. At the following Luge World Championships in 1997 in Igls , both won the gold medal again in doubles and in the team competition. At the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano , Schiegl and his cousin just barely missed the medal ranks with a fourth place.
At the 1999 World Luge Championships at Königssee, which took place in the following year , both the German Patric Leitner and Alexander Resch had to admit defeat and won the silver medal behind them. However, they won gold again in the team competition. At the European Luge Championships in Winterberg in 2000 , the Schiegls did not get beyond the bronze medal again. Also at the 2001 Luge World Championships in Calgary they had to settle for a two-seater bronze for the first time since 1995.
At the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City , the duo reached sixth place in the doubles. At the European Luge Championships in Altenberg that same year , both won bronze again. A year later at the World Championships in Sigulda , their compatriots Andreas Linger and Wolfgang Linger achieved silver. The 2003/04 World Cup season both ended in sixth place in the overall World Cup standings. At the 2004 Luge World Championships in Nagano , both of them missed the medal ranks with 4th place. The Austrian team also did not get past fourth place in the team competition. The duo also achieved fourth place at the 2004 European Luge Championships in Oberhof . In the following season, both started in the Luge Challenge Cup for the first time in addition to the World Cup . There they reached sixth place in the overall ranking of the 2004/05 season . In the World Cup, both were in fifth place overall.
At the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin , the duo was able to improve again, but, as in 1998, only narrowly missed the medal ranks with fourth place. In the following year, both managed to win the silver medal at the Luge World Championships . In 2008 it was only enough for bronze. In the Challenge Cup season 2008/09 both reached third place overall. In the World Cup it was only enough for seventh place.
At their last Winter Olympics in Vancouver in 2010 , the duo reached eighth place again. Shortly after the games, they both won bronze again at the 2010 European Luge Championships in Sigulda. In October 2010 Schiegl ended his active luge career and took over a position as a trainer for the Austrian national team.
Tobias Schiegl and his cousin won the Austrian state championship a total of 14 times. Schiegl is a regular soldier in the Austrian Armed Forces.
