The Königssee artificial ice rink (sponsor name 2014–2019: Deutsche Post Eisarena Königssee , since 2019: LOTTO Bayern Eisarena Königssee ) is an artificial ice rink for bobsleigh , toboggan and skeleton sports on Königssee in Berchtesgadener Land . It was the first artificial ice rink in the world and has 18 curves over a total length of 1640 meters - including a roundabout with a 360 ° curve (“Turbodrom”).

In October 2014, Deutsche Post AG became the name sponsor of the artificial ice rink. On July 1, 2019, LOTTO Bayern took over the name sponsorship.

history

Construction of the toboggan run began in 1959. The WSV Königssee built the railway, sponsored by the Tourist Association of Berchtesgaden and supported by numerous volunteers. On January 16 and 17, 1960, it was handed over to its destination with the International South German Luge Championships . In the years that followed, the railways and rail infrastructure were continuously expanded and optimized. From 1962, two-man bobsleighs could start on the track. In 1965 the sports facility received the status of a federal luge center.

In 1968 the track was converted to artificial ice, making it the first artificial ice rink in the world. The planning came from the engineering office Deyle in Stuttgart . The first expansion cost around DM 4.6 million , 80 percent of which was paid for by the federal government and 20 percent by the Free State of Bavaria . The track had a length of 1114 m and a total of 16 curves. The new artificial ice rink was also integrated into the natural terrain so that - apart from the roundabout - it does not have to be elevated. The shady location reduces the cooling energy requirement and ensures high ice quality.

On the Breitwiese in Berchtesgaden , the team house of the federal luge center was built, which was expanded in 1975 to include a sports hall. In the same year, the railway at Königssee received the world's first artificially iced start-up ramp. In 1976 the track was expanded for the four-bobsleigh. In the years that followed, the railway was continuously modernized. In 2004, the athletes and organizers were able to put a newly built starting house for bobsleigh, women toboggan, doubles and skeleton into operation.

Between February 1, 2010 and November 2010, one of the largest renovations on the railway took place in its history. In addition to some functional structures, the entire start area down to curve 5, as well as the entire lower section of the track from curve 15 over the finish curve to the exit, were rebuilt and adapted to the current requirements of the regulations for bobsleigh and sledging.

As of October 2014, the Königssee artificial ice rink had the sponsor name Deutsche Post Eisarena Königssee , since July 1, 2019 it has been LOTTO Bayern Eisarena Königssee .
