Thorsten Margis (born August 14, 1989 in Bad Honnef ) is a German bobsleigh athlete who is active as a push in two-man and four-man bobsleigh.

Life

Margis was initially active in athletics as a decathlete before he turned to bobsleigh in 2011 and initially drove for the BSR Oberhof and pilot Oliver Harraß . His greatest success in the decathlon was 4th place at the U20 World Cup in Bydgoszcz, Poland in 2008. Margis achieved the highest number of points in 2011 at the Natural Gas Meeting in Ratingen with 7707 points.

In 2013 he started in the four-man bobsleigh in the team of pilot Thomas Florschütz in his first World Cup in Altenberg and took part in the team of Francesco Friedrich as junior world champion in the 2013 World Championship in St. Moritz . Here he took fourth place with the Germany II team and 13th place in the foursome.

In 2013/2014 he was part of Francesco Friedrich's team from the beginning of the season as a pusher and together with Alexander Mann and Gregor Bermbach won the bronze medal in the four-man bobsleigh at the European Championships in Königssee . Margis was part of the German team at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi : Here, the four-man bobsleigh team Francesco Friedrich, Gregor Bermbach, Jannis Bäcker and Thorsten Margis only managed tenth place.

Francesco Friedrich's team won a bronze medal at the 2015 European Bobsleigh Championships in La Plagne . In addition to Thorsten Margis, the pushers Candy Bauer and Martin Grothkopp were there . At the 2015 World Championships in Winterberg , he won the gold medal in the two-man bobsleigh as a pusher for Francesco Friedrich and was just fourth in the four-man bobsleigh.

In the following 15/16 season, the Friedrich bobsleigh team dominated the first three World Cups in both disciplines. After an injury to the pilot Francesco Friedrich at the two-man World Cup in Whistler , the duo managed to defend their title at the World Championship in Igls in the two-man bobsleigh. In the big sled, the team was runner-up in the world championship, 0.04 seconds behind the team around pilot Oskars Melbardis .

At the 2016/17 Bobsleigh World Cup , the pilot Francesco Friedrich achieved overall victory in the two-man bobsleigh. Thorsten Margis was the pusher at five of the eight World Cup stations. The track record of 2017 includes the world championship title in two-man and four-man bobsleigh at the World Championships in Königssee and the gold medal in two-man bobsleigh at the 2017 European Bobsleigh Championships in Winterberg - each with driver Francesco Friedrich. At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , Margis and Friedrich were able to secure an Olympic gold medal in the two-man bobsleigh for the first time. The simultaneous Canadians Kripps / Kopacz also won gold.

On June 7, 2018, Thorsten Margis was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier for his athletic achievements at the 2018 Olympic Games .
